LEE CHILD says she's "a genius."
P.D. JAMES called her "the most remarkable" of today's suspense writers.
STIEG LARSSON loved her work so much, he named her in his novels.
And now SARA PARETSKY returns with the most extraordinary novel of her legendary career FALLOUT.
Before there was Lisbeth Salander, before there was Stephanie Plum, there was V.I. WARSHAWSKI. To her parents, she's Victoria Iphigenia. To her friends, she's Vic. But to clients seeking her talents as a detective, she's V.I. And her new case will lead her from her native Chicago... and into Kansas, on the trail of a vanished film student and a faded Hollywood star.
Accompanied by her dog, V.I. tracks her quarry through a university town, across fields where missile silos once flourished — and into a past riven by long-simmering racial tensions, a past that holds the key to the crimes of the present. But as the mysteries stack up, so does the body count. And in this, her toughest case, not even V.I. is safe.
Exciting and provocative, fiercely intelligent and witty, FALLOUT is reading at its most enjoyable and powerful.

Why do people rave about this? I'm a Sara Paretsky fan, have read every VI Warshawski novel, and some of her non-VI works, but this isn't a hit. It's a dreadful, confused (not confusing), rambling disaster. Up until now, I could never bring myself to put a VI Warshawsky novel down. This one, I kept putting down and finding excuses not to pick it up again. The worst failure any art work can have is to NOT be entertaining. This wasn't and that was why I had to power through it.It keeps moving down the road, leaving characters behind, as it meanders through developing the plot line, if you can call it that. One of the 2 characters that introduce the story, never shows up again.
I get that Sara Paretsky was looking to write about Lawrence, Kansas, and KU, where her father was on the faculty, but that doesn't excuse such a dreadful plotting exercise. Didn't her editors question it? Then there's the most annoying character SP ever introduced: The spoiled, selfish, headstrong, obnoxious to the bone, Bernie, whose sole attachment to Vic is her dad was cousin Boom-Boom's best friend in the NHL. And, no, Northwestern doesn't have either a men's or women's ice hockey team.(nusports.com). On top of it, Bernie lies to her parents when she promises not to repeat her actions.
But the real key to a failed novel of any sort is wrapping up all the plot thread lines in a few sentences or pages. It's like 3/4 of the novel was written and the author didn't have time to write the last 25%.

Fallout A VI Warshawski Novel VI Warshawski Novels Sara Paretsky 9780062435842 Books Reviews
Good long read. As usual there are too many villainous men. The actual physical dangers come toward the end as the story reaches the climax. Almost like reading a female Reacher novel. The 1983 hippie movements and anti-establishment environment are presented from the prevailing liberal views. The research into biochemical weapons is frightening, especially when the leader of the group is an anti-social near psychopath with a dysfunctional family. The involvement of a possible foreign agent in the development of American bio-chemical weapon is not believable. V.I. is another presentation of the Wonder Woman but she is becoming more human with various aches, etc and the possible loss of her friend, Jake.
I am a long time fan, but this eagerly awaited addition to the VI Warshawski canon is a disappointment. Unrealistic setup. Ridiculous follow through. Unsympathetic and undeveloped characters. Why should we care what happens to these people? I think Bernie can be retired forever. Seriously. And VI's break-up with her cellist boyfriend, while inevitable, was interpolated stiffly into the plot? Major plot is resolved through magical thinking, conveniently delivering a new lover to cushion the devastation of VI being (righteously) dumped. Vic needs to go back to Chicago; I think Mr. Contreras tops off my "annoying-but-lovable" quotient for this series. Also not clear why Vic took her dog with her, but Peppy was the only consistently sympathetic character, with credible motives, in the book. So, good choice, for us readers, if not for the dog. I'll be hoping for a return to form in the next installment of the VI Warshawski story.
If you found the previous book somewhat disappointing, rest assured that this book brings VI back full-force. Just like we like her! She is outof her element in Kansas but that allows the story to develop further resonance, away from Chicago, away from her own life story, which I found too asfixiating in the previous instalment.
Intriguing
Short review read it.
Sara Paretsky has once again written an excellent mystery. This stand-alone is easy to follow and difficult to put down. Some violence, no drag-you-down drama.
Compelling, realistic storyline with descriptive writing. Several twists throughout that keep the reader's interest.
Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking, informative and memorable dialogue.
'Chicago’s mayor and city council would go berserk if they found out there were towns in America that offered free parking in the heart of their downtowns. How could they overlook such a perfect opportunity to gouge the citizenry?'
“It will give me something to do, something concrete. Otherwise I will sit here playing what Dr. Roque always said was a loser’s game ‘should have, would have, could have, did not.’”
I may re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.
I am a fan of Sara Paretsky. I have read a number of her books and really enjoyed them. However, I was disappointed in this disjointed, rambling tale. The story was farfetched and was often confusing. There were too many characters who were poorly developed. I didn't really care for any of them. Even VI seemed flighty and annoying.I was going to give up a number of times, but when I reached the end I was glad it was over. Too bad.
I am a huge Sara Paretsky fan but was so disappointed in her newest novel. VI starts out in search of two characters. The novel evolves into the solution to an ages old murder and disappearance. In the process, those initial missing characters disappear from the narrative. There are so many improbabilities in this book. The timeline keeps changing. VI decides to bring her dog along. Why, I'm not sure. The poor dog is repeatedly stuck in the car. The only explanation seems to be so he can be used to save the day in the end. I hate, hate, hate novels that have a gazillion loose ends that all get tied together in the last two chapters. Even this conclusion is less than plausible. Such a disappointment. VI needs to stay in Chicago and stay focused on the initial characters. One last suggestion get rid of Bernie the brat.
