The international bestselling author of the Broken Empire and the Red Queen’s War trilogies begins a stunning epic fantasy series about a secretive order of holy warriors...

At the Convent of Sweet Mercy, young girls are raised to be killers. In some few children the old bloods show, gifting rare talents that can be honed to deadly or mystic effect. But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls.

A bloodstained child of nine falsely accused of murder, guilty of worse, Nona is stolen from the shadow of the noose. Among her class Nona finds a new family—and new enemies.

Despite the security and isolation of the convent, Nona’s secret and violent past finds her out, drawing with it the tangled politics of a crumbling empire. Her arrival sparks old feuds to life, igniting vicious struggles within the church and even drawing the eye of the emperor himself.

Beneath a dying sun, Nona Grey must master her inner demons, then loose them on those who stand in her way.

Years ago I started reading the Broken Empire, for some reason it did not capture me, I put it down, and somehow never picked it up again. After that I have been uninterested in reading the other works by Mark Lawrence, now I find myself reconsidering that choice. Red sister is an excellent start to what I hope to be an excellent new series. Exciting, fast paced, interesting magic system, compelling characters, and an intreating world. Honestly, what more would you want? I started this book, and simply could not find it in myself to put it down. Nona is interesting, you want to know more about her. We do not get the entire story right away, but it does not feel artificial or dragged out. The same with the world, and the limitations of the magic system, we do not know all, but it is enough.. for now. We get pieces of the puzzle all the time, and I never get the feeling that there is no more, and that the author is just stalling until he can make it up to fit his needs, it just take us some time to get the entire tale. I will definitely continue this series, and because I liked it so much I'm willing to give broken empire another chance as well!

Red Sister Book of the Ancestor Mark Lawrence 9781101988855 Books Reviews

With Red Sister, Mark Lawrence has done something that most fantasy authors avoid, creating another whole new world to set his new books in after seeing great success with his previous six books. Then this new world that Red Sister is set in, is even more interesting and unique than the already incredibly original setting of his first two trilogies. At its most basic, this is a magical school story set in a fantasy world, but if you pay attention to all of the world building that is expertly doled up throughout the book, this could be a science fiction book. The galaxy that Red Sister is set in is dying, with all of the stars in the sky being red, except for one white star that the people call the Hope. This could even potentially be our Milky Way galaxy, as the people in the book are humans. Except that the planet they're currently on was colonized by four different races of humanity that had evolutionarily branched off from one another, after potentially (this is not discussed in the books) citizens of Earth colonized four other planets after Earth became uninhabitable. The book is set millennia after the colonization of this new ice world in a solar system lit by a dying Red Giant Sun. The previous inhabitants, called The Missing, had built extensive cave systems under the ice and closer to the core of the planet to survive. The four races decided to intermingle to better survive this harsh planet, and they launched an artificial moon into orbit to act as a giant magnifying glass, focusing a beam of light from the red sun that runs across the entire world every night heating up a livable ring called the Corridor. The four races were called the Gerrant (incredibly strong giants), the Hunska (small dark haired and almost impossibly fast), the Marjal (magic users that can control the elements), and the Quantal (magic users that can walk the path to unleash primordial power into the world). Their average descendant that lives in the Corridor resembles the average human, but in rare cases the blood of the original races shows itself, and when they hit puberty they don't stop growing until they're eight or nine foot tall giants, or they're lightning fast and can slow their perception of time to a crawl, or if they're trained they can use magic. In even rarer cases a person can show two traits of the four races, and there's a prophecy that a person born who shows the traits of all four will be able to open the Ark, and fly the ship to the last white star in the sky, The Hope.

However, all of that stuff is in the background of Red Sister, and the main story follows Nona Grey, a ten year old girl that grew up in a small poor village on the outskirts of the Corridor. When we first see her, Nona's about to be hung for murder (or at least attempted murder) of the son of the most powerful noble in the empire. The guy is giant (literally) douche bag that gets his rocks off beating and killing people in the gladiatorial ring, and he has a penchant for abusing girls. The Abess of the Sister Mercy Convent comes at the last second to save Nona from the hangman's noose, and takes her to the Convent where she will be trained to be a Red Sister or a Grey Sister, the magical ninja assassin warriors of the Church of the Ancestor. The school setting is really interesting, as it allows the author to slowly reveal the world building as it's taught to Nona, and I really loved all of the different relationships that Nona builds as a student. As time goes one, she'll have to survive the at times very dangerous training, the Emperor's sister that might seek to use Nona or the other gifted students to expand her own power, and the assassins of the wronged noble that want her head on a pike. I loved all of the characters that are introduced at the convent, each teacher and most of Nona's fellow students were very well developed and interesting. I'll avoid any spoilers, but I'll just say that I really enjoyed all of the twists and turns that take place in the book. I saw most of them coming, but that actually worked because Nona as the viewpoint character realized the same things, but perhaps didn't want to believe them. I loved the conclusion of Red Sister, and it really solved all of the conflicts set up within the book, although their solutions will probably cause more problems that will need to be solved in the upcoming books. It had none of the problems that most first books of a series have, as this could almost be a standalone story, and I'm fine with waiting another year to continue her story.

The book is incredibly well written, especially all of the action scenes. The writing painted an excellent picture in my mind, and reminded me a lot of the movie that came out earlier this year, Logan, as the young X-23 (Laura) reminded me a lot of Nona. The fight scenes were so enthralling, that it was impossible to put the book down until you finished the scene, and even then you wouldn't want to stop reading. Mark Lawrence's prose is also among the best in the Fantasy genre, and it's a pleasure to read his books. They're highly readable with a great flow, but if you stop to examine the writing he definitely knows how to turn a phrase. I really think that this book could be enjoyed by all ages and sexes, as long as they don't mind some violence. Red Sister is nowhere near as dark as his previous books, but it's also definitely not light hearted. I also really think that this book could transcend the fantasy genre, as all readers could find a lot of different things to enjoy. I'd highly recommend Red Sister, and it's a perfect entry into the works of Mark Lawrence, as if you like this you also have two completed excellent trilogies set in a different world to read afterwards.
Spoiler Alert

I like Mark Lawrence's books; I would consider myself a fan and have read virtually everything he has put out. Red Sister had the potential to be his best novel thus far - the world building is excellent, most of the character development is similarly well done, and this novel contains the unique perspective and flawed protagonist that has characterize Lawrence's previous books.

But damn, it could have used another edit. Certain things just bugged me throughout the book - the main characters, generally female, are simply too young (ages 9-11, mostly) to make the narration believable. Make them teenagers and it would be easier to buy. The book is also pretty trope-y; it is basically Harry Potter in a convent, with Wolverine and ninjas thrown in for good measure. Dumbledore/Abbess Glass are cut from the same mold, for example. As much as I enjoyed Red Sister as a read, it was difficult not to notice the obvious parallels in story arc and characters to other novels in the genre.

There were also a glaring number of too-easy get-out-of-jail free cards used in the book - one example our protagonist group has rendered an adversary unconscious in essentially a cave, and must drag her out via a narrow passageway. They get her stuck. One of the novices, however, just happens to have a pot of grease in her pocket (with no real explanation as to why), which allows them to squeeze the body out. Irritating. And there are several other too-convenient situations like this.

I am ranting about these silly things because otherwise this is a well written novel, and they detracted from an otherwise excellent and entertaining read. Lawrence, a male writer, even pulled off writing about prepubescent girls bathing together without sexualuzing the situation or coming across as creepy.

Summation - well worth the read, but be prepared for the occasional howler.
